You fear that we will lose each other
And you are right, we will
We will part, promising to keep in touch, and then
We will forget
Real life will intrude, new friendships will form
And we will move on and let go
And yet, and yet…
When I laugh, it will be with his laugh
When he sings, it will be her songs
She will take my challah recipe,
And they will tell a joke not remembering that it was you who told it
(But it will still be your joke)
And one day you will tell a friend
A piece of knowledge that you learned from me
And so we will, all unknowing, carry pieces of each other on through our lives
For kal v’chomer, if the people who harm us should leave their black sticky fingerprints on our souls
Then how much more so should the people that we love?
