Night Seder Dvar: Vayeishev

Posted on December 16, 2011 by Shibley

Our parasha, Vayeishev, concludes this week with Yosef sitting in the prison of Pharaoh. Yosef has just concluded interpreting the dreams of his fellow prisoners, the cupbearer and the baker, both of whom had committed relatively minor crimes in the eyes of Pharoah. Why would Yosef care about the dreams of anybody? Remember, Yosef has Continue Reading »

This week’s parsha is full of the narrative action we have become familiar with in Bereishit, with this parsha in particular being so great as to be turned into a Broadway musical (Joseph and the Amazing Coat of Many Colours).  However, a less-known fact is that the Rashbam chooses the beginning of this parsha to Continue Reading »

The Pardes Sunset Project – That’s the Rest of Em…

Posted on December 12, 2011 by Heligman

Too often the shades of our life are drawn and God’s magnificent colors are missed.  I am taking on this project as a means to stop and enjoy God’s brilliance.  For the month of November, each day I will document the evening sunset from the Pardes Beit Midrash. I hope you will stop and notice Continue Reading »

This week’s parsha has so much going on that it is hard to figure out one thing to talk about.  I want to focus on something that occurs simply on the level of the text itself, without considering any commentators.  Over the course of Bereishit so far, a number of people have had their names Continue Reading »

This week’s parsha presents a number of fascinating narratives, as it deals with the major portion of Yaakov’s adult life prior to his children taking center stage in the narrative.  On the cursory reading that time allows me, the interactions between Yaakov and his father-in-law (and uncle) Lavan are extremely hard to follow.  It may Continue Reading »

One of the things that stayed with me after spending most of my four months in Chumash class last year at Pardes studying this week’s parsha is how important it is to consider Yitzchak’s mindset as he blesses his sons.  This is someone who probably had a very rocky relationship with their own father, and, Continue Reading »

A New Greenback

Posted on November 20, 2011 by Shibley

Nope, not about freshly printed U.S. dollars, but it got your attention! Nearly two weeks ago we began adding the request for rain to our daily prayers. Within hours, there was a torrential downpour, with a brilliant lightening display and booming thunder. This grand display of the awesome power of nature was certainly awe inspiring. Continue Reading »

Introducting Shabbat Board!

Posted on November 17, 2011 by J. Belasco

Hey Pardes!! I’m writing to introduce the Shabbat Board, which Ben announced at Community Lunch. The idea is simple: if you are looking for a place for a Shabbat meal, or if you are hosting and are looking for more guests, just send us an email letting us know which meal you want and how Continue Reading »

חיי שרה

This week’s parsha, with bookends describing the death of Sarah and the other descendents of Avraham and the descendents Yishma’el, deals mainly with the mission of Avraham’s servant to find a wife for Yitzchak. Reading the text, I was struck by how repetitive the story is. First, Avraham tells his servant what to do in Continue Reading »

Night Seder d’var: Chayei Sarah

Posted on November 16, 2011 by Shibley

Over the past weeks, I have used afternoon seder to study the laws of aveilut (mourning). As with many areas of halakha, there are numerous details and caveats. I have found myself troubled by the seemingly impersonal details of the halacha, which is brings me to Chayei Sarah, our parasha this week. Sarah dies in Continue Reading »
