Posted on October 15, 2014 by Binyamin Cohen

Night Seder Chevrutas Binyamin Cohen and David Wallach join together to reflect on this week’s parshah. א  וְזֹאת הַבְּרָכָה, אֲשֶׁר בֵּרַךְ מֹשֶׁה אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים–אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:  לִפְנֵי, מוֹתוֹ ב  וַיֹּאמַר, יְהוָה מִסִּינַי בָּא וְזָרַח מִשֵּׂעִיר לָמוֹ–הוֹפִיעַ מֵהַר פָּארָן, וְאָתָה מֵרִבְבֹת קֹדֶשׁ; מִימִינוֹ, אשדת (אֵשׁ דָּת) לָמוֹ “This is the blessing that Moses, the man of God, Continue Reading »

O’seh Shalom: Pray with Me

Posted on July 30, 2014 by Carrie Sealine

I shared these words at the final Community Lunch of the 2014 Summer Program: I am an unorthodox Jew. But I know I am Israel because I wrestle with Divine Power — אל — all the time. ישראל: the Power Wrestlers. Among the powers with which I struggle is the power that comes from privilege. The Oven of Retelling

Posted on February 26, 2014 by Naomi Bilmes

From my blog: What is the purpose of a story? To be re-written, of course! Below, I have composed a re-telling of one of the most famous stories in Jewish tradition. It is originally found in the Babylonian Talmud (Tractate Bava Metzia, page 59), and I recently learned it from a new angle with one Continue Reading »

[PCJE Dvar Torah] Upon Request

Posted on January 30, 2014 by Andrea Wiese

Last week’s Parsha ends with Moshe going up to HaShem on Har Sinai to receive the tables with the teachings and commandments. Our Parsha starts with HaShem telling Moshe to instruct B’nei Yisrael to bring “me” (HaShem) gifts which Moshe will collect.

Third Story: ‘The kiss’

Posted on January 30, 2014 by Dorielle Parker

Daniel Roth presented our ‘Judaism and Conflict Resolution’ class for Jewish Educators with this assignment, and below is the modern ‘Third Story’ that I wrote about Jacob and Esav: It is written: “And he kissed him” (Genesis 33:4) Do you remember your first kiss? Awkward braces, chapped lips, a pulse fast enough to make a Continue Reading »

Blogging Between Classes

Posted on October 2, 2013 by The Director of Digital Media

From my blog: Post College learning is incomparable to undergrad. It’s not even a question. If I were to sum up my undergrad formalized learning experience in one word, honestly, I would use coasting. I kind of floated through my classes, tried just hard enough to make it by, and instead focused my efforts on Continue Reading »

Joseph’s Dreams: an Artists’ Beit Midrash

Posted on May 29, 2013 by Avigayle Adler

In Daniel Roth’s Advanced Chumash: Biblical Mediation Class, Mike Nash & I ran an Artists’ Beit Midrash activity (download .PPT), based upon a comparison of Joseph’s two dreams. Our beit midrash activity was inspired by Jo Milgrom’s book Handmade Midrash. Here are our classmates (and Daniel Roth) hard at work, creating visual representations of Joseph’s Continue Reading »

On Those We Love

Posted on May 27, 2013 by Tadea Klein

My dvar Torah from the Galil Shabbaton: First of all, I would like to thank Adam Masser (Spring ’12, Year ’13), who gave me the perfect set up — and we didn’t even plan it. I also am going to talk about lashon ha-rah, specifically the consequences of it. I believe that the most telling Continue Reading »

[Alumni Guest Post] Ready!

Posted on May 12, 2013 by The Director of Digital Media

Sarah Margles (Year ’02, PEP ’04) reflects upon preparing for Shavuot… what does “readiness” mean? I remember when I first started at Pardes, I would spend much of Fridays getting ready for Shabbat – shopping, cooking, cleaning. When the siren went to light candles, my roommate would inevitably yell out, while running from the bathroom Continue Reading »
